Pirates Get Smacked Again . . . and Again

Friday night the Pirates lost to NL wild-card leading Milwaukee Brewers 10-4. On Saturday, they lost to the Brewers 6-3.

Friday night, Zach Duke pitched pretty well despite his average numbers. He went six, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits, striking out 4 and walking 2. Denny Bautista came on to start the 7th, but could not record an out. He gave up 3 hits and walked one which lead to 4 runs. Sean Burnett would pitch an inning (why is he still with this team?), giving up 2 more runs. Nyjer Morgan was the lone bright spot offensively for the Bucs, going 2-for-4.

Saturday night, despite his recent good outings in Indianapolis, Gorzelanny struggled. He gave up 6 runs on 7 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He also walked 3 while striking out 3. Those 3 walks are one fewer than he had in 35 innings in Indianapolis. Offensively, CF Nyjer Morgan and 1B Adam LaRoche each went 2-for-4 with one of LaRoche's hits coming as a solo shot. C Raul Chavez also had 2 hits in only 3 at bats.

Other odds and ends:
Gorzelanny was obviously recalled, along with Matt Capps. These moves come at the expense of Romulo Sanchez and TJ Beam.
Doug Mientkiewicz also returned from the bereavement list. Steve Pearce was sent to Triple-A to make room for Doug's return.

My Opinion:
1) The Pirates need to find some offense soon. Now the pitching is returning to its poor performance from earlier in the season.

2)Romulo Sanchez and TJ Beam are sent down and Sean Burnett is still with the team??? Sanchez played sparingly, but I really liked what I saw. He really had some pop on his fastball. Beams being sent down instead of Burnett is disappointing but swallowable. Beam had some trouble with control, walking 17 while only striking out 15. Burnett's ERA is a little higher at 4.36. Beam is at 4.01. I think the decision comes down to keeping another left-hander in the bullpen.
