Pittsburgh Pirates (6-9) lost 5-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals (11-5)
WP: Kyle Lohse (3-0) LP: Eric Bedard (0-4)
Every season, the Pirates choose one pitcher for whom they provide little to no run support. It is looking like this is Bedard's year. He has a 2.62 ERA (giving up three runs today), but the Pirates have only scored three runs total in his four starts. Some good news from the game was that RF Jose Tabata went 2 for 4. It was only Tabata's second multi-hit game of the season. His first was on Friday, so perhaps Tabata is regaining his stroke. The Pirates need his bat and his .140 average is not acceptable. The only Pirate run in today's game came in the eighth inning. Catcher Mike McKenry led off the inning with a double and was driven in on a single from pinch hitter Casey McGehee.
AAA: Indianapolis Indians (7-9) lost 3-2 to the Louisville Bats
WP: Josh Judy (1-0) LP: Tim Wood (0-3)
SP Rudy Owens threw seven shutout innings, striking out five. However, his good start was wasted when RP Tim Wood gave up a three run homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was Wood's second blown save of the season, and he currently holds an 11.81 ERA. It was impressive that the Indians got two runs, because they managed only three hits. However, two of them were triples; one each from CF Starling Marte and C Jose Morales.
AA: Altoona Curve (7-8) won 8-3 over the Richmond Flying Squirrels
WP: Duke Welker (1-0) LP: Daryl Maday (0-1)
The only starting position players without a hit in the game were CF Robbie Grossman and 3B Jeremy Farrell. Grossman came into the season as one of the Pirates' star minor leaguers, but he is hitting just .211 early in the season. Conversely, RF Adalberto Santos is starting to get noticed. He went 2 for 4 today with 3 RBI. He is hitting .469 on the season. 1B Matt Curry and SS Brock Holt also had two hit performances today. Holt is doing well with the bat too, with a .314 average.
A+: Bradenton Marauders (6-9) lost 14-4 to the Jupiter Hammerheads
WP: Matthew Neil (2-0) LP: Tyler Waldron (1-1)
1B Alex Dickerson had a good game, going 3 for 5 with a homerun. 3B Stefan Welch chipped in with a two hit game. However, the team left 10 runners on base. The big story in this game though, was the Bradenton pitchers inability to prevent runs. SP Tyler Waldron gave up seven runs in two innings. RP Joan Montero allowed five runs in two innings. RP Eliecer Navarro allowed two runs in four innings. RP Andy Vasquez was the only Marauder pitcher that didn't give up a run. Though, he only pitched one inning.
A: West Virginia Power (5-12) lost 4-3 to the Charleston RiverDogs
WP: Mariel Checo (2-0) LP: Emmanuel De Leon (1-2)
WP: Mariel Checo (2-0) LP: Emmanuel De Leon (1-2)
The Power led 3-0 going into the bottom of the ninth. However, RP Emmanuel De Leon couldn't close out the game. He walked two, threw a wild pitch, and gave up three hits, including a homerun. He did manage to strike out one batter. De Leon was replaced by Robert Kilcrease, but he was put into a difficult situation. He walked the first batter he faced then gave up a sacrifice fly to end the game.
