4/13 Baseball Round-Up

Even though the Pirates weren't able to get a victory, each of the teams' Minor League Affiliates came away with wins today.  Inside find write-ups for Pirates vs. Dodgers, Indianapolis Indians vs. Toledo Mud Hens, Altoona Curve vs. Richmond Flying Squirrels, Bradenton Marauders vs. Fort Myers Miracle, and West Virginia Power vs. Greenville Drive.

Pittsburgh Pirates (2-5) lost 5-0 to the San Francisco Giants (3-4)
WP: Matt Cain (1-0)   LP: James McDonald (0-1)
Wow....just wow.  Not only were the Pirates one-hit in this game by Matt Cain, but the only hit came from SP James McDonald.  I don't know what else to say about this.  I figured the Pirates would struggle with the stick a little this season, but they are really digging themselves into a hole early in the season.  The pitching has been fairly solid.  The offense needs to step it up, so that the team can take advantage of the good starts they have been getting.

AAA: Indianapolis Indians (4-4) won 3-2 over the Toledo Mud Hens (4-4)
WP: Daniel McCutchen (1-0) LP: Jose Ortega (0-1)
Things were looking kind of bleak for the Indians after seven innings.  They were trailing 2-1 and hadn't gotten much offense going.  However, they rallied for just enough as they tied it up in the bottom of the eighth on a Brandon Boggs single.  In the bottom of the ninth, the Indians loaded the bases on an error, walk, and single.  DH Nick Evans delivered the walk-off single that drove in RF Gorkys Hernandez to give the Indians the victory.

AA: Altoona Curve (4-3) won 5-0 over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (4-5)
WP: Nathan Baker (2-0)  LP: Chris Heston (0-1)
SP Nathan Baker pitched six scoreless innings, striking out one, and walking three.  The Curve scored three runs in both the fourth and seventh innings.  Walks to CF Robbie Grossman and SS Brock Holt opened the top of the 4th.  A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by 2B Jarek Cunningham allowed Grossman to come around to score.  Holt scored on a Andrew Lambo groundout.  Tony Sanchez followed it up with a double that drove in Cunningham.  However, on 1B Matt Curry's single, Sanchez was thrown out at home.  A clutch pinch hit, 2 RBI single from Ramon Cabrera in the 7th gave the Curve some breathing room.

A+: Bradenton Marauders (3-4) lost 1-0 to the Fort Myers Miracle (4-5)
WP: Jhonathan Ramos (2-1)  LP: Caleb Thielbar (0-1)
The Marauders were held scoreless through seven innings, but came through when it really counted.  Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Bradenton put together a mini-rally.  The bottom of the line-up got it started as RF Justin Howard led off the inning with a single.  3B Benji Gonzalez drew a walk, putting two runners on base for the top of the line-up.  2B Gift Ngoepe laid down a bunt to move the runners ahead.  SS Drew Maggi came through in the clutch with a 2 RBI single, tying the game.  It took extra innings to decide the winner.  The Marauders pulled off the comeback with a little help from Fort Myers' fielding.  Gonzalez led off the bottom of the 10th with a double and scored on a throwing error when Ngoepe tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt.  Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

A: West Virginia Power (3-6) won 3-2 over the Greenville Drive (4-5)
WP: Emmanuel De Leon (1-1)  LP: Jason Garcia (0-1)
In a game that was very similar to the performance turned in by the Bradenton Marauders, the Power tied the game up in the eighth and won it in the bottom of the 10th.  I actually had to go back and look to make sure I wasn't mixing the games up.  LF Willy Garcia tied the game up in the 8th with a 2-run homerun.  SS Alen Hanson led off the bottom of the tenth with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.
