4/20 Baseball Round-Up

The Indianapolis Indians' game was rained out, but Pittsburgh, Altoona, Bradenton, and West Virginia were in action. Inside find write-ups for Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals, Altoona Curve vs. Richmond Flying Squirrels, Bradenton Marauders vs. Fort Myers Miracle, and West Virginia Power vs. Charleston RiverDogs.

Pittsburgh Pirates (5-8) lost 4-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals (10-4)
WP: Lance Lynn (3-0)  S: Jason Motte (3)  LP: Charlie Morton (0-1)
There was some excitement at the beginning of the game.  LF Alex Pressley hit a long fly ball that bounced off the wall away from the St. Louis center fielder.  The ball continued to roll away, and Pressley continued to round the bases.  It was unconventional in that it was inside-the-park, but it was a lead-off homerun all the same.  However, the Pirates offense sputtered after that.  Their defense wasn't much better.  Only two of the Cardinals runs were earned, as the Pirates committed three errors.
AAA: Indianapolis Indians (6-8) vs. Columbus Clippers - postponed

AA: Altoona Curve (6-8) lost 15-7 to the Richmond Flying Squirrels
WP: Brett Bochy (1-0)  LP: Zach Foster (0-1)
The Curve got plenty of offense in this game.  RF Adalberto Santos went 4 for 5 with two doubles and four RBI.  Catcher Tony Sanchez and LF Quincy Lattimore each had two hits and combined to drive in three runs.  Altoona's pitching and fielding left much to be desired.  The pitchers gave up 22 hits, and the fielders committed four errors.  The Curve led 7-6 going into the eighth, but a six-run eighth and a three-run ninth gave the Flying Squirrels (seriously?) the win.
A+: Bradenton Marauders (6-7) won 4-3 over the Fort Myers Miracle
WP: Josh Poytress (1-0)  S: Quinton Miller (1)  LP: Jhon Garcia (0-2)
2B Drew Maggi led the Marauders on offense, going 2 for 4 with a homerun that turned out to be the game-winner.  SP Gerritt Cole threw five innings, striking out seven batters but allowing three runs.  Cole has pitched 12 innings this season and struck out 18 batters.
A: West Virginia Power (5-10) lost 4-3 to the Charleston RiverDogs
WP: Fred Lewis (2-0)  S: Ben Paullus (2)  LP: Stetson Allie (0-1)
West Virginia collected hits on Friday night, but they struggled to get runs.  SS Alen Hanson went 2 for 4 with a triple.  DH Dan Gamache went 2 for 4 with a double.  1B Jose Osuna also had two hits for the Power.  Most of the damage came against Power pitcher Stetson Allie.  Allie faced 6 batters in the bottom of the 7th inning.  He threw 29 pitches, but only 9 of them were strikes.  He allowed two runs and only recorded one out.
