4/25 Baseball Round-Up

Six total games today as the Pirates and Rockies had a double-header. Today's other games were Indianapolis Indians vs. Louisville Bats, Altoona Curve vs. Harrisburg Senators, Bradenton Marauders vs. Charlotte Stone Crabs, and West Virginia Power vs. Savannah Sand Gnats.

GAME 1: Pittsburgh Pirates (7-10) lost 2-1 to the Colorado Rockies (9-8)
WP: Matt Reynolds (2-0)  S: Rafael Betancourt (6)  LP: Chris Resop (0-2)
It's not often that a team leads the hit count 9-3 and loses the game 2-1.  Each Pirate starter, including SP James McDonald recorded one hit.  3B Pedro Alvarez hit a homerun in the seventh inning for the Buccos only run.  McDonald had a strong day.  He went seven innings, giving up one run and striking out eight.  Alvarez's homerun tied the game at 1-1.  However, the Rockies scored in the top of the eighth to get the win.

GAME 2: Pittsburgh Pirates (8-10) won 5-1 over the Colorado Rockies (9-9)
WP: Charlie Morton (1-1)  LP: Jhoulys Chacin (0-2)
This game was a snoozer until the fifth inning.  That's when the Pirates' bats came alive.  After a fly out by SP Charlie Morton, the line went like this: double, double, single, homerun, homerun.  LF Alex Pressley and RF Nate McLouth provided the doubles, CF Andrew McCutchen singled, and the homeruns were provided by 1B Garrett Jones and 3B Pedro Alvarez.  Alvarez added a double later.  He's giving us a glimmer of hope that he might not be a consistent sub-.200 hitter.  Morton, like McDonald in Game 1, lasted seven innings and gave up only a single run.
AAA: Indianapolis Indians (9-10) won 5-1 over the Louisville Bats
WP: Tim Wood (1-3)  S: Jose Diaz (2)   LP: Brett Tomko (0-3)
The Indianapolis pitching staff kept the Bats off the board until the ninth inning, when they gave up one meaningless run.  1B Jake Fox led the way for the Indians at the plate.  He had two doubles in three at-bats.  Fox also drove in three runs.  Starling Marte pinch hit for the pitcher and then stayed in the game to play CF.  He had a hit in one of his two at-bats

AA: Altoona Curve (7-10) lost 8-0 to the Harrisburg Senators
WP: Daniel Rosenbaum (3-0)   LP: Nathan Baker (2-2)
Five hits and no runs for the Curve.  The hits came from 2B Elevys Gonzalez, RF Adalberto Santos, 1B Matt Curry, 3B Jeremy Farrell, and PH Greg Picart.  Altoona went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.

A+: Bradenton Marauders (7-11) lost 8-0 to the Jupiter Hammerheads
WP: CJ Riefenhauser (3-0)   LP: Gerrit Cole (0-1)
The Marauders only managed four hits in this game.  They were provided by SS Gift Ngoepe, 3B Stefan Welch, LF Dan Grovatt, and DH Wes Freeman.  The team went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position. SP Gerrit Cole gave up five runs in five innings.  However, three of those runs were unearned.

A: West Virginia Power (6-12) won 2-1 over  the Savannah Sand Gnats
WP: Jordan Cooper (1-1)  LP: Jack Leathersich (0-1)
The Power and the Sand Gnats combined for only ten hits in this game; five each.  Only one of the three runs in the game was an earned run.  DH Alen Hanson had a 2 for 4 night.  This should come as no surprise now as he has been the best Pirates' minor leaguer early in the season.  SP Zachary Fuesser pitched six innings, giving up only one unearned run.  Though it was unearned because of a poor pick-off throw by Fuesser.
