4/24 Baseball Round-Up

All of the teams were back in action today.  Today's games were Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies, Indianapolis Indians vs. Louisville Bats, Altoona Curve vs. Harrisburg Senators, Bradenton Marauders vs. Jupiter Hammerheads, and West Virginia Power vs. Savannah Sand Gnats.

Pittsburgh Pirates (7-9) won 5-4 over the Colorado Rockies (8-8)
WP: Tony Watson (1-0)  S: Joel Hanrahan (3)  LP: Matt Belisle (1-1)
The Pirates struggled to put runs on the board for most of this game, but a two RBI double by CF Andrew McCutchen in the bottom of the seventh gave the Pirates a 3-2 lead.  They handed the lead back to the Rockies in the top of the eighth.  However, SS Clint Barmes homered in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.  It was Barmes' third hit of the night.  1B Casey McGehee added a run on an RBI single.  Closer Joel Hanrahan shut the door with a three up-three down ninth.  RF Jose Tabata and LF Alex Pressley each added two hits.  It seems like Tabata has fought his way out of his early slump.
AAA: Indianapolis Indians (8-10) won 5-3 over the Louisville Bats
WP: Jeff Locke (2-1)  S: Jose Diaz (1)   LP: Andrew Brackman (1-3)
CF Starling Marte led the way for the Indians with two hits, including a triple.  1B Nick Evans hit a two-run homerun in the fifth inning for some added insurance.  SP Jeff Locke had a nice day.  He lasted six innings and gave up only one run.  He struck out six and walked two.  2B Brian Friday struggled with runners in scoring position, leaving three stranded on base.

AA: Altoona Curve (7-9) lost 5-1 to the Harrisburg Senators
WP: Jeff Mandel (2-1)  S: Christian Garcia (2)  LP: Mike Colla (0-3)
Altoona had eight hits in the game, but left nine runners on base.  1B Matt Curry had a nice day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and drove in the only Curve run.  RF Adalberto Santos went 1 for 4 and has a .457 average.  Santos also stole two bases.  SP Mike Colla gave up five runs in five innings.  However, only one run was earned.

A+: Bradenton Marauders (7-10) lost 7-1 to the Jupiter Hammerheads
WP: Chad James (1-0)  LP: Casey Sadler (0-1)
SP Jameson Taillon had a nice game.  He threw five scoreless innings and struck out six Hammerheads.  In fact, neither team got on the board until the fifth inning.  LF Dan Grovatt hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the inning for the Marauders' only run.  2B Drew Maggi, SS Gift Ngoepe, RF Evan Chambers, and 3B Stefan Welch each added a hit for Bradenton.  Most of the damage came against RP Casey Sadler who gave up four runs in two innings pitched.

A: West Virginia Power (5-12) lost 14-5 to the Savannah Sand Gnats
WP: Rafael Montero (2-1)  LP: Ryan Hafner (0-1)
SP Ryan Hafner got smoked in this game.  He gave up seven runs (six earned) in only three innings.  RP Vince Payne didn't fare much better, allowing five runs in three innings.  SS Alen Hanson stayed hot with a 2 for 4 performance, including a double.  His average currently sits at .410.  DH Jodaneli Carvajal also went 2 for 4 with an RBI.  3B Kirk Singer and CF Gregory Polanco were the only starters held hitless.
