4/8 Baseball Round-Up

Outcomes from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Indianapolis Indians, and West Virginia Power.

Pittsburgh Pirates (2-1) won 5-4 over the Philadelphia Phillies (1-2)
WP: Joel Hanrahan (1-0)   LP: David Herndon (0-1)
The Pirates won again in walk-off fashion.  This time 3B Corey McGehee led of the ninth with a double.  Josh Harrison was then put in to run for McGehee.  LF Alex Pressley sacrificed Harrison to third.  RF Jose Tabata struck out, and with 2 outs CF Andrew McCutchen hit a long fly ball over CF Shane Victorino's head, scoring Harrison to win the game.  1B Matt Hague recorded his first hit in the 8th to tie the game.  SP James McDonald had a solid start, going 6 innings and giving up only 2 run.  McCutchen was 3 for 4 on the day, and 3B Pedro Alvarez hit his first HR of the season.  The Pirates head to Los Angeles for a series which starts on Tuesday.

AAA: Indianapolis Indians (2-1) won 8-2 over the Toledo Mud Hens (1-2)
WP: Brad Lincoln (1-0)  LP: Andrew Oliver (0-1)
The Indians put forth a 12 hit effort on Sunday.  They opened the scoring in the top of the third on a double by 2B Jordy Mercer which drove in two runs.  Indianapolis added three in the top of the fourth.  The first run of the inning came when CF Starling Marte reached on an error and DH Jeff Clement scored.  SS Brian Friday then drove in 1B Miles Durham and LF Gorkys Hernandez on a single to right.  The Indians plated the last three runs in the top of the 8th.  C Kris Watts' single drove in Clement and RF Brandon Boggs, and Hernandez drove in Durham with a single.

Top Performers: DH Jeff Clement went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and CF Starling Marte went 2 for 4 with a double.  SP Brad Lincoln lasted 5 innings, giving up only 1 run, striking out 6, and walking none.

A: West Virginia Power (1-3) lost 8-6 to the Hagerstown Suns (3-1)
WP: Taylor Hill (1-0)  S: Christian Mesa (1)  LP: Orlando Castro (0-1)
West Virginia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second.  With the bases loaded, 3B Kirk Singer doubled to left field (he would add another double later), plating all three baserunners.  Hagerstown CF Brian Goodwin tied it up in the bottom of the third with a 3-run HR.  West Virginia RF Josh Bell would earn back the lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.  However, in the bottom of the inning Hagerstown answered back with three runs of their own.  The Power couldn't climb back into the game after that.  They could only add two in the top of the ninth to make the score seem a little more presentable.

Top Performers: 2B Jordaneli Carvajal went 2 for 4 with a triple, 1B Chris Lashmet went 3 for 4, and the aforementioned Singer drove in four runs to go along with his two doubles.
