4/9 Baseball Round-Up

A little late today, but here is the round-up of the Pirates minor league affiliates from Monday.  Unfortunately, the Pirates organization was 0-4 last night.  There were some good individual performances, however.

AAA: Indianapolis Indians (2-2) lost 4-3 to the Columbus Clippers (4-1)
WP: Frank Herrman (1-0)  LP: Tim Wood (0-1)
The Indians wasted a great outing from SP Charlie Morton.  Morton made the rehab start and threw 98 pitches without a problem.  He lasted 7 2/3 innings, struck out 8, and gave up only 1 run.  Indianapolis took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth.  However, the combination of pitchers Jo-Jo Reyes and Tim Wood led to three runs against and a walk off loss.  On offense for the Indians, CF Starling Marte and C Eric Fryer each went 2 for 4.  Fryer had a double, and Marte had his first HR of the season.  RF Brandon Boggs added his second HR in the third inning.

AA: Altoona Curve (2-2) lost 5-1 to the Akron Aeros (3-1)
WP: Giovanni Soto (1-0)  LP: Aaron Pribanic (0-1)
The Curve managed only three hits in this game; one each from CF Robbie Grossman, 2B Jarek Cunningham, and RF Andrew Lambo.  Lambo's fourth inning single drove in Altoona's only run.  The Curve's pitching struggled, as well.  The Aeros managed 10 hits and 10 walks in the game.

A+: Bradenton Marauders (1-3) lost 2-1 to the Palm Beach Cardinals (2-3)
WP: Chase Reid (1-1)  LP: Jhonathan Ramos (1-1)
SP Gerrit Cole made his first professional start.  He went 4 innings, faced 17 batters, and struck out 7 of them.  The Cardinals managed one run off of the Pirates 2011 first overall draft pick.  The Marauder's offense could only muster up 4 hits.  2B Drew Maggi went 2 for 3, CF Evan Chambers went 1 for 3, and RF Mel Rojas went 1 for 4.  Chambers drove in the only Marauder run in the third inning.

A: West Virginia Power (1-4) lost 13-5 to the Asheville Tourists (2-3)
WP: Ben Alsup (1-0)  LP: Zach Dodson (0-1)
West Virginia managed 13 hits but went 3 for 15 with runners in scoring position.  DH Alen Hanson went 3 for 5, falling just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.  3B Jordaneli Carvajal, C Elias Diaz, and 2B Dan Gamache each collected two hits.  The Power did all of their damage in the 1st through 4th innings.  They managed only two hits (both from Hanson) after the 4th inning.
