Pirates Win 4-1; Snell Shines

Ian Snell had arguably one of his best performances of the season for the Pirates. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 4 hits, striking out 8 and walking 1. Sean Burnett, Denny Bautista, and TJ Beam also held the Cardinals off of the board. The only run was given up by John Grabow, who struggled to get 2 outs in the ninth inning while walking 2. Beam recorded the save, his first. Ryan Doumit also looked solid for the Bucs. He went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Yadier Molina did not have a good game for the Cardinals. His multiple blunders in the ninth inning, allowed the Pirates to add some insurance to their 1-0 lead. On a sacrifice bunt, he threw the ball to third, but the runner (Doumit) was called safe. Replays showed it was a bang-bang play. Then, with the bases loaded, he dropped a throw to the plate which could have easily been turned into a double play. Finally, Luis Rivas hit a deep fly to center and Jason Michaels faked tagging up and drew a throw from the Cardinal's CF. The throw was off-line, but the pitcher was there to back up the play. Molina, however, turned around and seemed to lose himself. He ran away from home plate, allowing Michaels to score and make the score 4-0.

Tonight, the Pirates and Cardinals meet again at 8:15. The projected starters are Jason Davis for the Pirates and Todd Wellemeyer for the Cardinals.
