Outcomes from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Indianapolis Indians, Altoona Curve, Bradenton Marauders, and West Virginia Power.
Pittsburgh Pirates (2-2) lose 2-1 to the Los Angeles Dodgers (4-1)
WP: Kenley Jansen (1-0) S: Javy Guerra (3) LP: Jason Grilli (0-1)
In a pitchers' duel, SP Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers' bullpen outlasted the Pirates on Tuesday. The Dodgers jumped out to a 1-0 leading in the first on a groundout by CF Matt Kemp. The Pirates got SP Kevin Correia off the hook in the tip of the 7th on a groundout by 1B Matt Hague which scored LF Alex Pressley. An inning and a half later, Los Angeles RF Andre Ethier hit a one run homerun off of RP Jason Grilli. In the top of the 9th, with the top of the order up, the Pirates couldn't muster enough magic. Pressley hit a one out single, but was wiped out as the game ended when CF Andrew McCutchen grounded into a double play.
AAA: Indianapolis Indians (2-3) lost 5-4 to the Columbus Clippers (5-1) in 12 innings
WP: Chen Lee (2-0) LP: Tim Wood (0-2)
The Indians had a four run 5th inning led by CF Starling Marte. His single drove in 2. Marte then stole second and third. As Marte was heading to third, C Luke Carlin's throwing error allowed the Indians' CF to score. Rudy Owens got the start for Indianapolis. He had a nice ratio of ground balls to fly balls (6 to 3). However, all three of those fly balls left the ball park. One of those came from our old friend Andy LaRoche who was playing SS for the Clippers.
AA: Altoona Curve (3-2) won 6-1 over Akron Aeros (3-2)
WP: Aaron Poreda (1-0) LP: Eric Berger (0-1)
Altoona put up a six spot in the fourth inning capped off by a 3-run HR hit by 3B Elevys Gonzalez. Before the homerun, a walk followed by three straight singles put the Curve out to a 3-0 lead. C Ramon Cabrera went 2 for 3 and 1B Matt Curry drove in 2 runs in the victory. That was all the offense the Curve would need as the Aeros were held to one run on six hits.
A+: Bradenton Marauders (2-3) won 6-2 over Palm Beach Cardinals (2-4)
WP: Hunter Strickland (1-0) LP: Drew Benes (0-1)
Big games from LF Dan Grovatt and 2B Drew Maggi paced the Marauders on Tuesday. The two had six hits between them; three each. The rest of the team had four hits. Maggi drove in two of the runs, and provided the only extra base hit for Bradenton. CF Evan Chambers also had 2 RBI, but couldn't manage a hit in five at-bats.
A: West Virginia Power (1-5) lost 6-5 to the Asheville Tourists (3-3)
WP: Nelson Gonzalez (1-0) LP: Emmanuel De Leon (0-1)
SP Nicholas Kingham lasted only 1 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and walking two. RF Josh Bell had a better night at the dish, going 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI. SS Alen Hanson and CF Gregory Polanco also had two hits a piece. The Power tied the game 5-5 in the top of the eighth. However, Tourist third baseman Rossell Herrera scored on a Emmanuel De Leon wild pitch to end the game in the bottom of the ninth.
