After testing the waters of free agency, WR Jerricho Cotchery has decided to re-sign with the Steelers according to an article from the National Football Post. Pittsburgh beat out the New York Jets, St. Louis Rams, and Kansas City Chiefs for Cotchery's services.
Cotchery's two year deal lessens the team's need to draft a wide receiver, though the need does still exist. The former Jets' WR came to the Steelers after the lockout last season, signing a one year deal. Expect him to be the #4 receiver on the depth chart behind Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown, and Emmanuel Sanders. Sanders had a down year last season, and Cotchery provides a safety valve in case 2012 is not much different.
Cotchery seemed to take over for Hines Ward last season when Ward seemed to lose a step. In 2012, Cotchery had 16 receptions for 237 yards and 2 TDs. His best season came in 2007 with the Jets. That season, he caught 82 passes for 1,130 yards
A wide receiver is still a virtual certainty at some point in the upcoming draft. The Steelers need to add some height to their receiving corps. Cotchery is their tallest receiver at 6'1". Be ready for Pittsburgh to grab a taller receiver anywhere from rounds 4 through 7.
