Outcomes from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Indianapolis Indians, Altoona Curve, Bradenton Marauders, and West Virginia Power.
Pittsburgh Pirates (2-3) lost 4-1 to the Los Angeles Dodgers (5-1)
WP: Clay Billingsley (2-0) S: Javy Guerra (4) LP: Eric Bedard (0-2)
SS Clint Barmes ended his hitless season in style with a homerun to open the scoring in the top of the 3rd. However, the Dodgers answered in the bottom of the inning, when a two-out single by 1B Juan Rivera scored 2B Mark Ellis from second base. They would add a run in the sixth inning on a single by RF Andre Ethier and two more in the seventh on singles from pinch hitter Tony Gwynn, Jr. and another from Rivera. Pirates' first baseman Garret Jones was the only Pirate with a multi-hit game with a single and a double.
AAA: Indianapolis Indians (3-3) won 8-6 over the Columbus Clippers (5-2)
WP: Justin Wilson (1-1) LP: Kevin Slowey (1-1)
Indianapolis tried to give this game away in the 8th and then again in the 9th. Four homeruns from the Clippers in those two innings made this game a nail-biter at the end. 2B Brian Friday was the only starter for the Indians held hitless. C Eric Fryer, 3B/1B Jeremy Farrell, and LF Gorkys Hernandez each had two hits in their four at bats. RF Brandon Boggs hit a solo HR in the 4th inning (his 3rd of the season). SS Jordy Mercer hit his first of the season in the fifth inning, another solo shot.
AA: Altoona Curve (3-2) game vs. Akron Aeros (3-2) was POSTPONED
A+: Bradenton Marauders (2-3) lost 10-4 to the Palm Beach Cardinals (2-4)
WP: Hunter Strickland (1-0) LP: Drew Benes (0-1)
This is definitely not a good news type of game for the Bucs. AJ Burnett started this game and gave up 8 runs (5 earned) in 1 2/3 innings. The Palm Beach Cardinals scored 9 runs in the second inning, sending 14 batters to the plate. 1B Alex Dickerson had a nice game at the dish, going 3 for 4 and driving in two runs. CF Evan Chambers added two hits of his own.
A: West Virginia Power (1-6) lost 10-4 to the Asheville Tourists (4-3)
WP: Geoff Parker (1-1) LP: Mike Jefferson (1-1)
The Power are really struggling to start the season. It doesn't help when the team averages almost 8 runs against per game. On a good note, RF Josh Bell hit his first professional HR and went 2 for 4, driving in 3 runs. CF Gregory Polanco also added a HR, his first of the season. In fact, DH Chris Lashmet was the only hitter for West Virginia that did not record a hit.
