4/12 Baseball Round-Up

Outcomes from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Indianapolis Indians, Altoona Curve, Bradenton Marauders, and West Virginia Power.

Pittsburgh Pirates (2-4) lost 3-2 to the Los Angeles Dodgers (5-1)
WP: Chris Capuano (1-0)   S: Mike MacDougal (5)  LP: Jeff Karstens (0-1)
The Dodgers jumped out to an early lead with a three-run first inning.  Pittsburgh tried to scratch their way back into it...and nearly did.  Catcher Michael McKenry hit his first homerun of the season in the fifth to get the Bucs on the board.  It was a solo shot.  They would add one more run when CF Andrew McCutchen scored on a sacrifice fly by LF Yamaico Navarro.  After that, the Dodgers shut the door.  McCutchen went 3 for 3 and 1B Casey McGehee went 2 for 4.  Matt Hague pinch hit for SP Jeff Karstens in the top of the sixth.  The bases were loaded and the Pirates were down 3-2.  He roped one into center field, but right at Matt Kemp.

AAA: Indianapolis Indians (3-4) lost 5-4 to the Columbus Clippers (6-2)
WP: Corey Kluber (2-0)  S: Chris Ray (2) LP: Jeff Locke (0-1)
Three of the Indians' four runs came off the bat of SS Jordy Mercer.  Mercer's 5th inning homerun gave Indianapolis the lead.  The Clippers came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, however, and that was enough for them to earn the victory.  Indianapolis had only 4 hits and struck out 13 times.  RF Brandon Boggs struck out in each of his four at-bats.

AA: Altoona Curve (3-3) lost 7-3 to the Akron Aeros (4-2)
WP: Jason Stevenson (1-1)  LP: Mike Colla (0-1)
The Aeros put up five runs in the first three innings, and the Curve could never catch up.  SS Brock Holt had two of the team's seven hits, including their only extra base hit.  CF Robbie Grossman, 1B Matt Curry, LF Quincy Lattimore, 3B Elevys Gonzalez, and pinch hitter Ramon Cabrera had a hit a piece.

A+: Bradenton Marauders (2-4) lost 1-0 to the Fort Meers Miracle (4-4)
WP: Ricky Bowen (1-0)  S: Edgar Ibarra (1)  LP: Eliecer Navarro (0-1)
The Marauders managed eight hits, but went 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position.  CF Mel Rojas went 3 for 3 with a double and a triple.  The only run crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Miracle DH Josmil Pinto.  Marauder starting pitcher Colton Cain threw 5 scoreless innings.

A: West Virginia Power (2-6) won 5-1 over the Greenville Drive (4-4)
WP: Matt Benedict (1-1)  LP: Henry Owens (1-1)
The Power turned in a 12 hit performance as the pitchers and defense finally caught up with the offense.  SS Alen Hanson and 1B Jose Osuna each had three hits.  Two of Osuna's hits were doubles.  RF Josh Bell went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI.  CF Gregory Polanco had two hits and drove in three runs.  SP Matt Benedict pitched five innings, struck out three, and gave up one run.
