4/16 Baseball Round-Up

The Pirates and their minor league affiliates went 2-3 on Monday, April 16. Inside find write-ups for Pirates vs. Giants, Indianapolis Indians vs. Toledo Mud Hens, Altoona Curve vs. Richmond Flying Squirrels, Bradenton Marauders vs. Fort Myers Miracle, and West Virginia Power vs. Greenville Drive.

Pittsburgh Pirates (3-7) lost 5-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks (7-3)
WP: Joe Saunders (1-0)  LP: Eric Bedard (0-3)
SP Eric Bedard has to be second guessing his decision to join the Pirates at this point.  He has a 2.65 ERA, but is 0-3 due to a lack of run support.  The Pirates scored one run on six hits.  The only run came in the top of the first when 2B Neil Walker singled in CF Andrew McCutchen.  Three Diamondbacks homered to lead Arizona to victory; 2B Aaron Hill, CF Chris Young, and PH Gerardo Parra.
AAA: Indianapolis Indians (5-6) lost 9-2 to the Toledo Mud Hens (6-5)
WP: Thad Weber (2-0)  LP: AJ Burnett (0-1)
Brad Eldred continued to haunt his old organization with a first inning homerun.  AJ Burnett made a rehab start and this one did not go much better than the first.  He gave up 5 runs in four innings and walked four.  He did not record a strike out.  The Indians had only three hits in the game, one being a solo homerun by RF Brandon Boggs.  That is four on the season for Boggs.  The other hits came from 2B Greg Picart and 1B Matt Hague.

AA: Altoona Curve (5-5) won 5-2 over the Harrisburg Senators (7-5)
WP: Aaron Poreda (2-0)  S: Tim Alderson (1)   LP: Paul Demmy (0-1)
2B Jarek Cunningham went 2 for 4 with a homerun.  C Ramon Cabrera went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs.  The only starting position player without a hit was RF Andrew Lambo.  The Curve really displayed their patience in this game, drawing seven walks.

A+: Bradenton Marauders (5-6) won 3-0 over the Palm Beach Cardinals (4-7)
WP: Tyler Waldron (1-0)  S: Zachary Foster (1)   LP: Drew Benes (0-2)
SP Tyler Waldron pitched five shutout innings and RPs Casey Sadler and Zachary Foster combined for four scoreless innings.  Bradenton scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Three triples paved the way for three runs.  The triples came from CF Mel Rojas, C Carlos Paulino, and DH Wes Freeman.  Rojas scored on Paulino's triple, Paulino scored on Freeman's triple, and SS Gift Ngoepe singled home Freeman.

A: West Virginia Power (5-7) lost 16-0 to the Asheville Tourists (8-4)

WP: Vianney Mayo (1-1)  LP: Mike Jefferson (1-2)
The Power were absolutely annihilated in this game.  Asheville SP Vianney Mayo pitched a complete game shutout.  None of the Power pitches could keep the Tourists from scoring.  They also allowed 17 hits.  West Virginia pitcher Jordan Cooper was ejected in the ninth inning of the game for hitting Tourist catcher William Swanner after giving up a homerun.
