4/7 Baseball Round-Up

Outcomes from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Indianapolis Indians, Altoona Curve, Bradenton Marauders, and West Virginia Power.

Pittsburgh Pirates (1-1) won 2-1 in the 10th versus the Philadelphia Phillies (1-1)
WP: Juan Cruz (1-0)    LP: Joe Blanton (0-1)
The Pirates collected their first win of the season on Saturday.  They fell behind in the first inning when Shane Victorino scored on an infield single by Hunter Pence.  Yamaico Navarro pinch hit for pitcher Jeff Karstens in the seventh and earned a walk.  He would score on a wild pitch to tie the game.  It took until the 10th inning for the next run to be scored.  Catcher Rod Barajas led off with a double.  Mike McKenry was inserted as a pinch runner.  Clint Barmes sacrificed McKenry to third.  Alex Pressley came to bat later in the inning with two outs and runners on 1st and 3rd.  He hit a broken bat dribbler to SS, but beat out the throw from Jimmy Rollins.  McKenry scored on the play and the Jolly Roger was raised for the first time in the 2012 season.

AAA: Indianapolis Indians (1-1) won 8-7 over the Toledo Mud Hens (1-1)
WP: Doug Slaten (1-0)   LP: Drew Smyly (0-1)
2B Jordy Mercer went 4 for 6 in the Indians first win.  RF Brandon Boggs went 2 for 5 with a HR and a triple, driving in 2 runs.  Pitcher Tim Woods attempted to give the win away in the 9th, giving up 3 runs before recording the final out.

AA: Altoona Curve (2-1) lost 12-1 to the Erie SeaWolves (1-2)
WP: Jared Wesson (1-0)   LP: Brandon Cumpton (0-1)
CF Robbie Grossman went 2 for 4.  1B Matt Curry singled in C Tony Sanchez for the only Curve run in the second inning.  That was pretty much the end of the Altoona offense.  An Erie 5 run fifth inning put this game out of reach, not to mention a 3 run sixth and a 2 run seventh.

A+: Bradenton Marauders (1-2) lost 4-2 to the St. Lucie Mets (2-1)
WP: Chase Huchingson (1-0)  LP: Jameson Taillon (0-1)
SP Jameson Taillon lasted 3 2/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and walked 2.  He also struck out 6 of the 17 batters that he faced.  He struggled in the third.  Taillon plunked the first batter of the inning, threw two wild pitches, and gave up a single before striking out the side.  1B Alex Dickerson and CF Mel Rojas each went 2 for 4 with the latter collecting his first triple of the season.  Bradenton was held scoreless until they plated 2 runs in the ninth inning.

A: West Virginia Power (1-2) lost 4-3 to the Hagerstown Suns (2-1)
WP: Alex Meyer (1-0)   S: Aaron Barrett (1)  LP: Matt Benedict (0-1)
SP Matt Benedict didn't actually pitch bad enough to earn this loss.  Yes, he gave up 3 runs in 4 2/3 innings, but he also struck out 7 of the 20 batters he faced.  1B Jose Osuna and CF Junior Sosa each had two hits in the loss.  RF Josh Bell went 0 for 3 with a strikeout, that's seven in his first 3 games.
